Launched in Durham in 2017, the Eatwell program in NC was initially a pilot initiative by the non-profit Reinvestment Partners to address food insecurity. It has since expanded statewide through various partnerships to help patients with diet-related health conditions access fresh produce.

According to the World Health Organization, in 2022, nearly 40% of the world's population did not have access to a healthy diet, leading to malnutrition in all its forms, from undernutrition to obesity. The healthy Meal Initiative represents a global effort by governments, non-profits, and communities to combat this issue by ensuring vulnerable populations have consistent access to nutritious, safe, and affordable food.
