According to a study of US population data from 2009-2014, the prevalence of celiac disease and gluten avoidance is higher in states at latitudes of 35° North or greater. While this suggests a higher proportion of individuals avoiding gluten in northern states, identifying what state has the most gluten-free people is more complex, involving factors beyond just prevalence.

While a recent 2018 meta-analysis found the global prevalence of biopsy-confirmed celiac disease to be 0.7%, studies show significant regional variations. Contrary to older assumptions, Finland and parts of North Africa consistently report some of the highest rates for what country has the highest celiac rate. However, disparities in diagnostic practices worldwide mean these figures may not capture the full picture.
