Despite their similar appearance, Bambara beans and chickpeas are not the same legume, belonging to different plant genuses. While chickpeas (Cicer arietinum) are one of the world's most widely cultivated pulses, Bambara beans (Vigna subterranea) are a vital, albeit lesser-known, crop predominantly grown in sub-Saharan Africa.
