While chemically similar to regular water, a recent study published in *PLOS Water* revealed that 100% heavy water (D₂O) triggers a more heightened apoptotic response in human cells than high-dose radiation exposure. This astonishing finding brings a new perspective to the question: is deuterium water drinkable?

While a single glass of heavy water will likely not cause harm, replacing a significant portion of your body's water with deuterium oxide (D2O) is toxic to human cells. Normal tap water contains only trace amounts of deuterium, but pure or highly concentrated deuterium water, known as heavy water, can disrupt crucial cellular processes.

With approximately one in every 6,400 hydrogen atoms in normal water being a deuterium isotope, these two types of water are fundamentally different. Although both are related to the element hydrogen, their molecular structures, properties, and health effects are not interchangeable, which is a crucial distinction for consumers to understand.
