According to the National Poisons Information Centre of Ireland, many ornamental garden plants contain toxic bulbs. This is a critical distinction, as some bulbs are common kitchen staples, while others can cause severe illness or death. So, are bulbs safe to eat?

In the Dutch Hunger Winter of 1944–45, starving citizens famously ate tulip bulbs for survival, raising a critical question: Are any flower bulbs edible in modern times, or are the dangers too great to consider? While a handful of varieties are indeed safe, the vast majority of ornamental bulbs are highly toxic, and misidentification can have fatal consequences.
