According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), FD&C Yellow No. 5 is an approved synthetic dye. The chemical compound is perhaps more widely known by another name: tartrazine. This lemon-yellow colorant is commonly used in various processed foods, drinks, medications, and cosmetics to enhance visual appeal.

Yellow 5, a synthetic lemon-yellow azo dye, has been in use since 1884 and has never been officially renamed. The perception that there is a single new name often stems from confusion over its various scientific and international labeling terms, such as Tartrazine.

Tartrazine, or FD&C Yellow No. 5, is one of the most widely used synthetic food dyes globally, appearing in thousands of processed products from beverages to baked goods. Despite its prevalence, it's also one of the most allergenic azo dyes, triggering allergic-type reactions in a small portion of the population.

An estimated safe level of INS 102, also known as Tartrazine, for most individuals, has been set by the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). While generally considered safe within these limits, sensitivity and health conditions can influence the impact.

Food and beverage manufacturers use a variety of certified food color additives to enhance the visual appeal of products. FD&C yellow is a category of such additives, with the two most common being FD&C Yellow No. 5 and FD&C Yellow No. 6, which are used in a surprising number of processed foods and medications to create vibrant yellow and orange shades.
