According to Feeding America, in 2023, 22% of Black people in the United States experienced food insecurity, which is more than double the rate of white people. Addressing what are the main causes of food insecurity in marginalized communities requires a deep dive into complex, systemic issues that perpetuate a lack of reliable access to nutritious food.

According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), millions of Indian children are stunted, wasted, or underweight, underscoring a severe and persistent food security problem. The most affected food security people in India are concentrated within specific demographics and regions, often facing intersecting challenges of poverty, social inequality, and limited resources.

According to the World Bank, a staggering 28%—nearly 2.3 billion people—were moderately or severely food insecure in 2024, representing those who lack regular access to adequate food. The issue disproportionately affects already vulnerable populations, with low-income individuals, women, and children among the groups experiencing the greatest risk. Understanding who these groups are is the first step toward effective intervention and equitable change.
