According to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), any patient with negligible food intake for more than five days is at risk of developing refeeding problems. This serious metabolic complication, known as refeeding syndrome, is caused by the sudden reintroduction of food after a period of starvation and can lead to life-threatening electrolyte shifts.
