According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, all dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. A nutritionist is not automatically a medical doctor; the term can be used by individuals with varying levels of education and training, while a medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.) requires extensive schooling and licensing to practice medicine.
