According to the American College of Gastroenterology, enteral nutrition is the preferred method for providing nutritional support to patients with a functional gastrointestinal tract who are unable to consume adequate calories orally. A prime example of enteral nutrition is nasogastric (NG) tube feeding, where a specialized liquid formula is delivered directly into the stomach through a tube inserted via the nose.
