According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global misuse of antibiotics in animals contributes to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, posing a risk to public health. So, are chicken farms allowed to use antibiotics, and under what rules? The answer is complex and varies significantly based on regional regulations and the specific purpose of the medication.

A 2013 study found that kosher chicken had a higher prevalence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli compared to conventional and organic samples. This finding challenges the common assumption that kosher practices prohibit antibiotic use, raising the question: Can kosher meat have antibiotics?

According to the Chicken Farmers of Canada, the industry eliminated the preventive use of Category I and II antibiotics by 2018, which are deemed important for human medicine. This does not mean all Canadian chickens are raised without antibiotics, as some are still used for treatment and preventative measures not impacting human health.
