Launched in 1997, the original Surge soft drink contained 51 milligrams of caffeine per 12-ounce serving. This citrus-flavored beverage entered the market as Coca-Cola's answer to Pepsi's popular Mountain Dew, gaining a reputation for being a highly-caffeinated, edgy alternative for 90s kids. The drink's real caffeine levels, however, were often misremembered and even slightly lower than its main competitor.
