According to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, the pyloric valve at the bottom of the stomach closes when food is present, especially fatty and protein-rich foods, thereby slowing intoxication. This mechanism is why a hearty meal, like a steak, can seem to help with alcohol by delaying its absorption into the bloodstream and preventing blood alcohol levels from spiking too quickly. However, it is a delay, not a cure for intoxication.
