Most eggs sold in grocery stores are not fertilized, but a small white disc on the yolk's surface, known as the germinal disc, is one of several natural structures found inside an egg. An egg yolk makes up about one-third of the total liquid weight of an egg, and it is also the source of the majority of an egg's vitamins and minerals. This dense, yellow substance is officially called the yolk, derived from the Old English word 'geolu' meaning yellow.
