According to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), a standard single shot of espresso is typically defined as 0.85 to 1.2 ounces, a measurement that is far smaller than the volume of a quarter cup. The idea that a single shot of espresso is 1/4 cup is a common coffee myth, as the true measurement is closer to 1 ounce. This confusion often stems from the concentrated nature of espresso and the varying sizes of traditional coffee cups.

A standard espresso shot contains approximately 63 milligrams of caffeine. In a comparison of the two, the long shot has more caffeine than a ristretto due to a longer extraction time and increased water volume.

According to specialty coffee standards, a traditional double shot of espresso, or 'doppio,' typically yields 2 fluid ounces. This can cause confusion, as in bartending, a standard double shot of liquor is often 3 ounces. So, is 3 oz a double shot, and why do these measurements differ so significantly between beverages?
